Maths Vision statement
The vision for the subject of Mathematics is to cultivate a robust understanding and appreciation of mathematical concepts among all learners, in alignment with the national curriculum. Our aim is to empower students with essential life skills, enabling them to apply mathematical reasoning and problem-solving techniques in real-world contexts. We aspire to create an engaging and inclusive learning environment that fosters curiosity, resilience, and critical thinking.
At Aston by Sutton, our vision for mathematics education is to foster a deep understanding and appreciation of the subject among all students. We are committed to delivering a high-quality mathematics curriculum that aligns with the primary curriculum and incorporates the principles of the ‘Maths No Problem!’ approach. This methodology emphasises mastery through a concrete-pictorial-abstract progression, ensuring that students build a solid foundation in mathematical concepts.
We believe that every child has the potential to excel in mathematics. Our teaching strategies are designed to promote active engagement, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. We aim to create a supportive learning environment where students feel confident to explore mathematical ideas and develop resilience in tackling challenges.
Through collaborative learning and the use of varied resources, we strive to make mathematics relevant and enjoyable. Our goal is to equip students with the skills necessary to apply their mathematical knowledge in real-world contexts, fostering a lifelong love for learning. By instilling a positive mindset towards mathematics, we prepare our students to succeed academically and contribute meaningfully to society.
Implementation
Our mastery approach to the curriculum is designed to develop children's knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts from the Early Years through to the end of Y6. We use Maths No Problem as our whole school scheme.
“We believe that every child can master an understanding and love of maths with the right kind of teaching and support. We want you to join our mission to build the confidence of the nation’s maths teachers and learners.” Maths No Problem (2016).
Leadership, Assessment and Feedback
Assessment informs the teaching and learning sequence, and children work on the objectives they are assessed as being at, with fluid boosting available within a ‘keep up not catch up’ culture.
In order to support teacher judgments, children are assessed using NFER tests in line with the National Curriculum for maths. Gap analysis of any tests that the children complete is undertaken and fed into future planning.
Summative assessments are completed three times a year and reported to parents in the end of year report.
Miss Webster attends collaborative meetings in our local Maths Hub, where the most recent research and practice is shared.
Impact
Children demonstrate a quick recall of facts and procedures. This includes the recollection of times tables.
Children show confidence in believing that they will achieve.
Each child achieves the objectives (expected standard) for the year group.
The flexibility and fluidity to move between different contexts and representations of maths.
The chance to develop the ability to recognise relationships and make connections in maths lessons.
Mathematical concepts or skills are mastered with children showing it in multiple ways, using the mathematical language to explain their ideas, and independently applying the concept to new problems in unfamiliar situations.
Children show a high level of pride in the presentation and understanding of the work
Respect – Inspire – Achieve
Through Maths all of our learners have the opportunity to reflect our Values of Respect – Inspire – Achieve by
Respect - We respect other people's methods and opinions in discussions, we respect that learning is a journey and we won't always get it right first time.
Inspire - We are inspired by our work, we inspire others by sharing our methods and ideas with them, we take on challenges and are positive about our learning.
Achieve - We push ourselves to achieve the very best that we can, we strive to achieve more over time in arithmetic papers, times tables, number bond knowledge.
