Aston by Sutton Curriculum Intent
Aston by Sutton Primary is a small, rural primary school that places family and nurture at its core. We provide a caring and enriching learning environment, which is inclusive, and enables our children to be highly competent in all aspects of their learning. As a result, our children leave our school with high academic attainment and are well prepared for the next stage of their journey beyond primary school.
Our curriculum is designed to provide a broad and balanced education that is ambitious for all learners. The curriculum at Aston is flexible and responsive to meet the needs of all children. We successfully adapt, design and develop our curriculum for pupils with SEND. It provides opportunities for children to develop as independent, confident and successful learners. Our Curriculum is carefully structured so that it builds on children’s prior learning and develops their knowledge and skills in a progressive manner, and once the children reach year one, it spans a two year cycle (Year A and Year B), to ensure a balanced and coherent approach, and ensuring all learning opportunities are given due time, care and challenge.
The experiential learning experiences engage and motivate the children, capitalising on their interests. Learning is enriched through opportunities to learn outside of the school, as well as visitors to school by people who share their expertise and talents. Our curriculum is designed to recognise that every child is unique. We encourage them to shine by achieving their high aspirations, who know how to make a positive contribution to their community and the wider society.
Our curriculum embraces our unique setting recognising the local environment, local history, heritage and geographical links. It is enriched with opportunities to learn outside in the school grounds, school garden and woodlands and further afield in surrounding areas, reinforcing the importance of physical activity and development, well-being and mental health.
The context of our school means that it is ever more important to ensure that our children are aware of the diversity of wider society, nationally and globally. Our curriculum provides our children with an appreciation and understanding of cultures beyond our local community as well as becoming courageous advocates of issues locally, nationally and globally prepared for life in modern Britain and as global citizens. We are passionate that our children learn about the needs of others which is demonstrated in the charitable work we participate in. Aston children are taught responsibility and resilience through a range of roles within their family groups and class structures, culminating in the opportunity to apply to be Playleaders, Buddy, Lead Learner or Head Pupil and Deputy Head Pupil.
Fundamentally, children leave our school with a sense of belonging and community, where they have self-belief, confidence and the skills and knowledge to become life-long passionate learners and positive role models in society.
Ultimately, our intent is to foster a love for learning, celebrating academic and personal success.
